Asked “What things keep you captive in “prison” even when you’re free, one young woman shared that her mom is unable to share her emotions with our locked up lamb. This young woman told her mom a while ago that she was a “wall” because she doesn’t share her emotions. We discussed that her mom is doing the best she can with what she knows. We shared that we know a young woman who got married with the expectations that her husband would make her feel valuable and meet all her needs. We explained that she had unrealistic expectations because no one is perfect. The only One who is perfect is Jesus therefore only He can meet all our needs.
The JDO with us that day asked if she could also share her experience: She explained that when she got married, she had certain expectations of her husband that he could never meet because they are different people. What’s normal to her isn’t normal to him thus she thought things should be one way and he thought things should be another. They fought until she realized that her expectations were the things SHE expected, not the things HE was capable of or willing to do. She shared that this young woman’s expectations were probably higher than her mom was able to meet.
We asked her to read 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 – “Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” God’s love loves the other person right where they are without expectations. Her relationship with her mom will never get better until she stops looking at the situation from the perspective of how it affects her personally and considers her mom’s brokenness.
“And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32
TRUTH:
T#1 – Many things imprison us even when we aren’t in a physical prison cell.
T#2 – Only God’s Truth gives us opportunity to be free from the things that hold us captive.
SOMETHING TO PONDER: In what ways do my perspectives /expectations keep me from what God wants me to do?
Thank you for your continued commitment to pray for Hawaii’s Locked Up Lambs! Have an amazing week in our Lord!
